Trash, Recycling & Composting
Trash
As of January 1, 2025, trash and recycling will be collected by Good’s Disposal Service. This municipal contract will continue through December 31, 2027.
MONDAY is the collection day for trash, recycling and 1 large bulk item, unless otherwise delayed one day (which means Tuesday) due to a holiday. COLLECTION DAYS THAT FALL ON OR AFTER A HOLIDAY, WILL BE DELAYED ONE DAY. If you are unsure whether trash will be delayed, consult the calendar on the home page or download the annual calendar.
- Trash, recycling & 1 large bulk item must be curbside by 6:00a.m. every Monday, unless delayed due to a holiday.
- No more than 6 thirty-two (32) gallon size cans/bags per unit will be collected per week. A can with a larger gallon capacity may be used but total output may not exceed what is equivalent to the 6 thirty-two (32) gallon limit. So a 64-gallon or 96-gallon size is usable.
- Bags & cans must not exceed 60 pounds
- Residents are responsible for providing their own trash can or tote and recycling container.
- No construction debris allowed for collection
Curbside Recycling
Recycling is collected the same day as trash by the trash hauler. The Borough receives money based on the volume of material being recycled. By recycling all permitted items, you are helping to keep your taxes low. For more information visit the York County Solid Waste Authority’s site here.
For electronics recycling, see http://www.ycswa.com/recycling/recycle-electronics/.
Composting
Composting is very easy, really works well in the garden and reduces the volume of waste. Please see this information from the county.
Sanitary Sewer
Almost the entire Borough and most of the more developed areas of Hellam Township are served by the Eastern York County Sewer Authority (EYCSA). If you’re a EYCSA customer, whether new or long term, you really should take a look at the customer handbook that is available here. The Authority Board meets the 4th Monday of most months at 7:00 pm at their office located at 4 W. Market St., on the square in Hallam, PA 17406. If you have questions or concerns, you may contact Chastity Polonikas, Executive Secretary via telephone at (717)252-2797, email or by visiting her at the 4 W. Market St. office during her normal business hours. Please note the Authority’s mailing address is 4 West Market St., Hallam, PA 17406. Here’s a nicely done brochure that tells more about the sewer system and its importance.
Public Water
Public water is provided by York Water Co. You may visit their website here for more information.
Natural Gas
Gas is distributed throughout the Borough by Columbia Gas Co. More information is available from their website by clicking here. There is a number of suppliers listed on the state website, at https://www.pagasswitch.com/
Cable & Internet
Comcast has been granted the monopoly for wired internet and cable TV in the Borough. DIRECTV and others are also available throughout the Borough.
Electric Service
Met-Ed/First Energy Corp. is the distributor of electric in the Borough and operates and maintains the distribution system. There are numerous electricity suppliers available. Here is more information on electric choices in Pennsylvania. Just as a side note, we all need to give a shout-out to First Energy for the world class effort they expend on the substation landscaping at the corner of West Beaver and Emig Streets.
